How To Create A New Folder In Outlook Mobile App

Your inbox can be an absolute nightmare to look at. You get so much spam and random emails that they end up drowning the important emails. What you need to do is create new folders in Outlook. That way, you can move important emails over to your newly created folders and make your inbox much more organized in the process.

Creating New Folders in Outlook via Website

1. Locate and launch your preferred web browser and head on over to Outlook's homepage.

2. Sign in with a valid Microsoft account and correct password or you can create a Microsoft account. After signing in, you'll be immediately redirected to Outlook. You'll need a Microsoft account if you want to use Outlook.

create folder

3. In Outlook, look to the left hand side. You'll notice a panel with various options. At the very bottom of the column, click Create folder. It will open a text box.

type in a name

4. In the text box, type in a name relevant to what you need it for. When you've chosen a name for your new folder, go ahead and simply hit the Enter key.

create a new subfolder

5. Right click the new folder you've created. A drop down menu will appear. In the drop down menu, you can make additional choices, like creating a subfolder or outright deleting the folder entirely.

6. Any and all emails that pertain to the new folder you've created, you can drag and drop them into the folder for safe keeping.

filter the folder

7. In the new folder you've created, click Filter. It's located to the right of the name of the folder, near the top of the web browser and below the Search bar. A drop down menu will appear. Inside the drop down menu, you can filter out emails based on the choices provided in the drop down menu.

Add to Favorites

8. In the new folder you've created, look near the top where the name of the folder is. You'll notice a small, empty star. That is Add to Favorites. Click it and it will be considered a "favorite." Click it again and it will no longer be a favorite.

  • You can see which folders are favorited by the fact that the star is filled in.
  • You can also see your favorited items by looking in the top left corner of the web browser. There's a "Favorites" tab you can expand.

Creating New Folders with Outlook Mobile App

The app version of the Outlook email service does have the ability to create new folders. However, and unfortunately, the way you go about doing so is, admittedly, difficult. Difficult in the sense that it isn't available right there on the spot. You wouldn't know it existed unless you found it by mistake or, as you're reading this, you were told how to find it. First, you have to select an email, choose to move it and then you can create a folder.

1. Locate and launch the Outlook app. Its icon is an opened blue envelope, next to an 'O', against a white backdrop. You can find the Outlook app somewhere on one of your home screens. If you couldn't find the app on the home screen, check inside your App Drawer. All currently installed apps are housed in the App Drawer.

  • iOS does not have an App Drawer. If you can't find the Outlook app, then you might be swiping past it. Double-check any app folders you have, too.

2. Log in with your Microsoft account, if you aren't already logged into Outlook.

locate an email

3. Locate an email that you want to move into a folder. Take your finger and touch the email, but hold it there until the email is selected. You'll know it's selected by the checkmarked circle.

4. In the top right corner of the screen, you'll see three vertical dots. Go ahead and select it with your finger. It will produce a drop down menu.

move to folder

5. In the drop down menu, select Move to folder. It will present you with a window, containing a list of your folders currently made on your Microsoft account.

create a folder

6. In the window, tap Create a folder. It's the addition sign at the very top right corner of the window. Doing so will prompt your virtual keyboard.

move to folder

7. Name the new folder something pertaining to the emails they will contain. Tap the checkmark on your virtual keyboard to confirm the name and then exit out of the window. Tap the three vertical dots located in the top right corner of the screen and then, in the drop down menu, choose Move to folder, again. Your new folder will now show up among your choices of folders to move the email to

8. Go ahead and tap the newly created folder. Afterwards, select OK. You'll get a notification on Outlook that your conversation was moved.
